(SportsNetwork.com) - The last time the Los Angeles Kings and Chicago Blackhawks faced off, a trip to the Stanley Cup Finals was on the line. The two clubs meet for the first time since last seasons Western Conference finals as the Kings host the Blackhawks in Chicagos final stop on its annual Circus Trip. While the Blackhawks have had the upper hand in this series during the regular season -- winning 12 of the past 16 encounters overall and six of the last seven played in Los Angeles, the Kings came through when it mattered most last spring. Los Angeles built a 3-0 series lead before Chicago rebounded with a pair of wins, taking Game 5 in double overtime and then winning a 4-3 decision in Game 6 in L.A. to send the series to a decisive seventh game. Los Angeles is just 2-4-4 on the road this season compared to 10-2-1 at home, where it will play two straight and three of its next four. The Kings picked up that second road win on Wednesday, salvaging the finale of a three-game swing with a 4-0 win over the Minnesota Wild. Mike Richards, Dustin Brown, Tyler Toffoli and Justin Williams all scored first-period goals and Martin Jones made 28 saves for his first shutout of the season and fifth of his career. Yet referees dont have the benefit of slow-motion instant replays, and have only their assistant referees with whom they can consult for input. Often times, the referees view of an incident is not ideal, and can be blocked by other players. Yet they are expected to get decisions correct every time. With the benefit of instant replays, it is often much easier to make those decisions. Should Wes Brown have been sent off for Sunderland? No. Should Kevin Mirallas have been red carded for his horrible tackle on Luis Suarez? Absolutely. What makes a referees job more difficult, though, is that the vast majority of fans (and even some professional players, coaches and analysts!) do not fully understand the laws of the game. Case in point: Arsenals penalty kick in their game against Southampton. After a Tomas Rosicky corner kick was delivered into Southamptons penalty area, referee Mark Clattenburg blew his whistle and pointed to the penalty spot.
