DETROIT -- Reggie Bushs long run was a highlight -- one the Detroit Lions nearly wasted with the kinds of mistakes they can ill afford once the season starts. Austin Romine Yankees Jersey . "The big thing that kind of hurt us tonight were penalties and turnovers," quarterback Matthew Stafford said. "You have those, you make it tough on yourself. We cant do that." Bushs 86-yard touchdown gave the Lions an early lead, and they eventually came away with a 13-12 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Friday night. But Detroit also turned the ball over three times and committed 15 penalties, looking a lot like the team that frittered away a playoff spot last season because of costly mistakes in close games. Calvin Johnson played for the first time this preseason, catching two passes for 27 yards, but Stafford was intercepted once and the Lions struggled in the red zone. Blake Bortles threw for 158 yards and a touchdown for the Jaguars. Jacksonville started Chad Henne, but Bortles -- the third pick in this years draft -- was impressive in relief. He completed 10 of 16 passes, including a 13-yard touchdown to Allen Hurns. The Jaguars were about as mistake-prone as the Lions, turning the ball over twice and committing 12 penalties for 101 yards. Detroits 15 penalties went for 131 yards, including a roughing the passer call on Ndamukong Suh. "For the most part, I havent seen too many (penalties) that were simply physical -- that they couldnt do anything about it," said Detroit coach Jim Caldwell, who took over in the off-season after Jim Schwartz was fired. "The ones we had were preventable, and thats what well work on." Detroit was stopped on fourth down inside the Jacksonville 5-yard line in the first half, and Mikel Leshoure lost a fumble deep in Jaguars territory in the fourth quarter. Ryan Broyles had a fumble at the Jacksonville 1 overturned on replay. George Winn scored from there to give Detroit a 13-12 lead with 7:12 remaining. Even when Detroits top players were in, the Lions struggled at times. Stafford nearly had two passes intercepted on the first drive, but Bush scored on his long run later in the quarter, showing he can still outrun defensive backs in the open field. "My whole mentality was just not to get caught from behind," Bush said. "I dont want to come back to the sideline and have guys talking trash and laughing at me that I got caught from behind." Stafford was intercepted by defensive end Andre Branch on the first play of Detroits third possession. Jacksonvilles Josh Scobee kicked a 38-yard first-quarter field goal but was replaced by Kasey Redfern because of a quadriceps injury. Redfern made a 34-yarder in the second quarter but had a 45-yard attempt blocked in the third. Henne went 9 of 14 for 70 yards and avoided any major mistakes. But Bortles, the first quarterback taken in this years draft, was able to move the Jaguars down the field. Jacksonville started at its own 5 with 1:43 remaining in the first half, and Bortles was able to guide the Jaguars into position for Redferns kick as time expired. In the third quarter, Bortles took the Jaguars from their own 14 to the Detroit 27 before Redferns kick was blocked by Xavier Proctor. On its next drive, Jacksonville went 49 yards in four plays for its only touchdown. Coach Gus Bradley maintains that Henne is still the starter, and Bortles seems fine with that at this point. "This has been a perfect situation for me, because it has been a stress-free learning experience," Bortles said. "I knew on Day One that Chad was going to be the starter, and Ive been able to just focus on learning from him. When hes on the field, Im his biggest fan, because I want to see things going right and learn how it works in the NFL." Hurns had seven catches for 113 yards. Jacksonvilles Denard Robinson, a star quarterback when he was at Michigan in nearby Ann Arbor, got a nice cheer from the crowd in the first quarter when he made a tackle on special teams. NOTES: Detroit FB Montell Owens was evaluated for a possible first-quarter head injury, and Caldwell said he didnt have an update afterward. Lions LB Kyle Van Noy sat out with an abdominal injury. ... Bradley said Scobees injury wasnt too serious, but DT David Carter left in the fourth quarter with a sprained MCL, and DT SenDerrick Marks is expected to have an MRI on a shoulder injury. FS Winston Guy Jr. hurt his left ankle, but tests came back negative. Jorge Posada Yankees Jersey . Gerald Green and Miles Plumlee? Green had bounced around the NBA when he wasnt playing overseas. The Pacers gave up on Plumlee after just one season. Now Green and Plumlee are key cogs in the Suns surprising breakout season. At Manchester United, Ferguson developed Beckham into one of the worlds most recognizable sportsmen, but the midfielder left United in 2003 for Real Madrid under a cloud after his relationship with the manager broke down.SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Billionaire Chris Hansen, who tried to move the Kings NBA franchise from Sacramento to Seattle, is behind a secretive effort to thwart the citys efforts to build a new downtown arena for the professional basketball team, Californias campaign watchdog disclosed Friday after an investigation. The announcement is an embarrassment for Hansen, who lost his bid after NBA owners voted to keep the team in Californias capital city, and it could undermine support for the local ballot measure Hansen funded that is designed to put to a citywide vote the councils planned $258 million subsidy for a downtown arena. "I made a mistake I regret," Hansen said in a written statement. "While Im sure everyone can appreciate how easy it is to get caught up in the heat of battle, with the benefit of hindsight, this is clearly a decision I regret." Hansen had said he would end his effort to buy the Kings for $625 million after the NBA blocked the sale, and a group of investors led by technology executive Vivek Ranadive bought the team a day later for $535 million. Hansen publicly wished the city well after losing his bid to buy the team. Yet the California Fair Political Practices Commission said that a month later, Hansen gave $80,000 to pay signature gatherers trying to get the measure on next Junes ballot, and the group violated state law by refusing to disclose the donation. The NBA has said that Sacramento must build a modern arena to keep the Kings in town. The teams new owners have set a 2016 target. Hansens money was funneled through the Los Angeles law firm of Loeb & Loeb. Hansen said the firm approached him about making a contribution to the petition effort after he had hired them to gauge citizen opposition during the battle over the sale. Members of Sacramento Taxpayers Opposed to Pork, which filed to put the initiative on the June 2014 ballot, distanced themselves from the money and said they use only volunteers to circulate petitions. New York Yankees Store. Spokesman John Hyde said the money went to a political group that offered to assist STOPs efforts. "No doubt this is a PR nightmare for STOP," Hyde said. "We didnt know where that money came from and we werent the recipient of any of that funding." The signature gatherers are halfway to the 22,000 they need to qualify the measure by December, Hyde said. Gary Winuk, chief of the commissions enforcement division, said Hansen donated $100,000 total. It was not immediately clear what happened to the additional $20,000, though Winuk said it might have been spent on other expenses. He said the investigation is continuing. "These are as sophisticated parties as you can get and they should know better," Winuk said. "Most people just comply when we call them. They just happened to make us take them to court." The donors were intentionally denying the public information that could help them decide whether to sign the petition, he said. The commission filed a lawsuit Thursday to learn the donors identity and revealed during a Friday news conference that it was Hansen. "Unbelievable," said state Senate President pro Tempore Darrel Steinberg, who is from Sacramento and was active in efforts to keep the Kings in town. Kings and NBA officials declined comment, as did Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson, a former NBA all-star who led the fight to keep the team. Suspicion about the origins of the money originally had fallen on the Maloof family that previously owned the team because the same law firm had long represented them. The commission was dropping its lawsuit, but Winuk said Hansen and the law firm could face a civil fine of up to $80,000 plus an administrative fine of up to $5,000 for each of at least three campaign-reporting violations.
